Eminem - Lose yourself
The lyrics of this song are trying to show people that Eminem's life is very hard, it also describes the troubles that he goes through daily.
His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy
There's vomit on his sweater already, mom's spaghetti
He's nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready
To drop bombs, but he keeps on forgettin'
What he wrote down, the whole crowd goes so loud
He opens his mouth, but the words won't come out
He's chokin', how, everybody's jokin' now
The clocks run out, times up, over, blaow!
This is a part of the first verse in the song.I have found that with this song it tells a story very well unlike the other music videos where there was a lot of disjuncture. In this music video along side the lyrics you see there are images of Eminem preparing himself for a rap battle which is what the lyrics are describing here. Throughout the video what you see on screen is what you are also listening to. However there is still that classic convention of this type of music video which is Eminem rapping directly to the camera (the audience). Again in this video it often cuts back and forth from the same shots, ;like the previous music videos.
With this music video it is clear to see who the main protagonist is. With him being in 90% of the shots it allows the audience to connect with this artist, as it shows him with his life, in real hard situations. The artist has a very unique voice and with a lot of the close up shots being on him while he is telling is story through the song it allows the audience to connect with him as they may have had similar life experiences. Also the artist has a unique style of clothing with a beanie hat underneath a hoodie. This is a good example of the 'star theory' in action as it helps to promote the artists public image.
Most of the music video is in low key lighting in order to show that the story of this music video is not a happy subject, in addition to making the video seem more intense. One of the locations hows Eminem is light that is flashing in his face making the music video have more of a darker feel/ more sinister. Another part of the mes en scene is where Eminem is outside where it is still dark (keeping to the theme) and a sign behind him which says '8 Mile R.O Mobile Court' This shows that Eminem is in a location called 8 mile and this is links to the narrative as a lot of his troubled times were in the 8 Mile. Also later on is the song where it seems to be Eminem performing at a concert, during this the video continues with the bright flashes that were at the start, keeping to the sinister feel.
Also like most music videos There were a lot of cuts on the beat of the music to make the music flow more. Also there area lot of dissolves as transitions between shots, which I have also found to be the case in the previous music video.
