Dr Dre - Still Dre
'Still D.R.E' by Dr Dre
Lyrics
The lyrics to the song are basically trying to put across that Dr Dre is doing well and that he hasn't changed like everyone else has. H e is trying to put across that he is still the Dr Dre that everyone knows despite some setbacks that he may have had. This is easily shows through his lyrics throughout but towards the end of the song are repeated to show the main msg of the song.
I'm representing for them gangstas all across the world
Still hitting them corners in them lo-lo's, girl
(Still taking my time to perfect the beat
And I still got love for the streets, it's the D-R-E)
The visuals of this music video fit with the lyrics. This music video shows Dr Dre and Snoop Dog driving around the city where they are from or where they originate. This song is about Dr Dre connecting to his roots and not changing, as he shows this by having every element of his lifestyle in the music video (Lo Rider cars, Women, friends, the 'streets').
This genre I have found in this music video to display only a small amount of narrative. At the start of the video it is clear to see that Dr Dre is the main protagonist of the video and singer, with snoop Dogg literally by his side in the car. They are both driving to the beach where there is some sort of party going on and then they leave. by the time they leave it seems to be midnight. Unlike most music videos, this one hardly has any narrative. The purpose of this song is to show off that Dr Dre is still a part of his culture. The narrative of this music video does show that, but to the bear minimum.
The establishing shot of this music video shows everything there is to see in the music video straight away. It shows some men driving a car with some half naked women in the back. It then cuts to one of the cars bouncing which is another recurring theme in this video. This sets up the overall theme for the rest of the song. Our main characters in this music video are shown first through close up shots of their faces in order to show that they are more important than the extras and to show the audience that it is their music video. The first shots of snoop Dogg and Dr Dre are in the 'streets' with women and their friends which is the point that the video is trying to get across, that Dr Dre hasn't changed. This replenishes his public image.
With the technical aspect of the video you can see clearly after 1:44 that there are cuts on the beats making it more interesting for the audience, also you can see the use of slow motion on the video to make the main themes of the video look more dramatic (half naked women twerking, bouncing lo riders). In this video colour isn't really used to set the mood as this video is set to be more realistic, however there is a slight tint of warmth that seems to be added to the image to make it have the stereotypical atmosphere that one of these songs has from this genre, and maybe to make the women in the video look more tanned.
