Record Labels

It seems that the top record labels were founded by big hip hip rappers themselves with one of the top being Aftermath Entertainment. Aftermath was founded by Dr. Dre in 1996. This record label is subsidiary of, and is distributed through Universal music group's Interscope records. This label has worked with numerous hip hip rappers including Eminem, 50 Cent, Kendrik Lamar, Jon Connor, Justus, even Dr. Dre himself and many more.

Another Experienced record label for this genre is Def Jam. They have signed people such as 2 chainz, Kanye West, Jeezy, and many more artists. They have a Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Tumblr pages. They also host events with their signed artists that are on around the globe several times each month. Def Jam also distribute their own clothing brand through their website along side DC box sets and other products.

Distribution:
Aftermath uses Interscope records as their distributor. They distribute their songs through CD's mainly due to the 90's era that old school hip hop was in. A lot of their songs are on popular music stores on the internet such as iTunes and Spotify. They don't have specific pages on either of these sites like most modern record labels so they do have room for a lot of work, however the record label isn't very active anymore with producing music so the big money that they have made from music was a long time ago.

Def Jam are mainly distributed by Universal Music Distribution. They have a wider range of distribution than Aftermath with Interscope records. This distribution company is still very active with now a few signings of artists within the pop genre. This company now mainly distributes through music streaming sites and other music download stores, such as Itunes.

Social media:

Social media is incredibly useful for record labels as it allows for their artists to almost be advertised for free. Most record labels will advertise their product/artist with an advertisement on social media such as facebook, twitter or instagram, and others by sharing a snip-it from a music video or song. If people find this interesting they will share it, then the people who follow them will share it and the cycle goes on. If the record label shares something interesting about the artist's new music video then it is more likely to spread throughout social media faster.
I have seen a trend on social media. Most audiences want to be closer/more intimate with artists that they follow, so in order for their intimacy to increase record labels have been sharing the behind the scenes footage of the creation of these music videos. This is an excellent idea as the people who watch the behind the scenes will then want to watch the final product/music video as they would wasn't to see how it turned out in the end and if the team working on it achieved what they wanted, and see if they themselves enjoy it.

Normally in the caption there will be a link to the final music video where the audience can watch it on sites like YouTube and them maybe purchase it. If the final music video hasn't come out yet and the audience has seen the behind the scenes, it will create hype and anticipation for when it does get released, this may make the audience want to follow the record company on social media so that they can see the final product. This will also cause them to be up to date with future music videos to come and may cause them to share them to their followers creating more of a wider audience.
