Mise en scene in Nelly - Dilemma ft. Kelly Rowland

Image
The mise en scene in this music video is close to the kind of mise en scene that I want in my music video, also it is the easiest type of mise en scene as I have all the resources in order to master it. This mise en scene is mainly just a regular town. I have chosen to study this mise en scene because my song is about the hood and what bad things happen within it. This song shows what an American hood will look like. Lighting It seems as if the music video is using natural daylight lighting, there could be minimal soft light when the artists are in shade. At night there is more low key lighting. This lighting is more angled and hard light directed towards the focus of the shot. In this music video lighting isn't really used as much as it could have been. Scenery Everything physical within the scene is very middle class, not very rich but not very poor, so it relates to the majority of people. They are trying to put across a normal urban environment where the two protagonist...

Editing in R. Kelly - Ignition (Remix) (Official Video)

Image
This music video uses editing in a different way to most music videos I have seen, for example at the start of the music video the artist sings the lyrics 'so baby lemme give you that toot toot, and lemme give you the beep beep'. When the artist says 'toot toot' and 'beep beep' the music video cuts to shots of a car, showing what R. Kelly is referencing a car. Then after when R. Kelly enters a party there are jump cuts on the snare beats of the music. This 'cut on beat' is used throughout hip hop but not like this music video where it is obvious. During the chorus of this music video the transition used between shots is a fade/dissolve. This is used to visually separate the chorus from the music video. This is s typical editing convention of the old school hip hop genre as it is used in a lot of music videos, however this music video has used it in a more focussed way than most. Another use of editing is the colour grading which isn't very or...

Camera movement in The Notorious B.I.G. - "Juicy" (Official Video)

Image
The camera work in this video stays connected to the beat like most hip hop songs. The way that Notorious raps in this song is slow and steady paced but continuous. This is the same as the camera work it isn't fast paced and is continuously moving. This can show me that the camera work should fit in with the beat in order for the video to flow with the music better. This music video still uses high and low angles when focusing on the artist, all of these shots use a gimbal in order to keep the smooth gentle feel of the music video. I have also found that almost none of the shot are static. This is also common for these types of music videos. There are also a few tracking shots that are mainly used when the artist is walking to keep the focus on him, This is also common with this genre too as I see it in a lot of other music videos with the camera tracking the artist in cars, so this type of shot is usually used when the artist is moving around. My music video is more up bea...

Extra intertextuality

Image
This scene lays out the america This kind of meet up with friends in the hood shows the relationship between characters in this environment which would add to the narrative. This could be a part of the lyrics where the rapper in the song talks about hustling, in this scene from the game GTA we are shown just that. These two intertextuality ideas cam build up my narrative and allow me to develop my own ideas to extend these scenarios.

Record Labels

It seems that the top record labels were founded by big hip hip rappers themselves with one of the top being Aftermath Entertainment. Aftermath was founded by Dr. Dre in 1996. This record label is subsidiary of, and is distributed through Universal music group's Interscope records. This label has worked with numerous hip hip rappers including Eminem, 50 Cent, Kendrik Lamar, Jon Connor, Justus, even Dr. Dre himself and many more. Another Experienced record label for this genre is Def Jam. They have signed people such as 2 chainz, Kanye West, Jeezy, and many more artists. They have a Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Tumblr pages. They also host events with their signed artists that are on around the globe several times each month. Def Jam also distribute their own clothing brand through their website along side DC box sets and other products. Distribution: Aftermath uses Interscope records as their distributor. They distribute their songs through CD's mainly due to ...

Costumes

Image
Costumes for music videos are very similar in this genre of music with slight differences. In the music video Ridin' by Chamillionaire, he has various outfits that keep the same style.  This kind of costume sums up the kind of thing that all the hip hop rappers used to wear around this time. They wear very large cloths, normally XXL so that the cloths are baggy on them, both on the top and bottom half, They are almost always wear some sort of necklace, normally gold. There is also one unique style of clothing that I see with this genre, and that is wearing a bandanna-type headpiece and on top a flat beak cap. Another example of this style is with 50 Cent who often has this style in his music videos.

Music Industry

Purpose of a music video: The purpose is to lure audiences in to an interesting music video so that they will buy the song that is used for the video. It's main purpose is to sell the artist/ video as a product. Music videos can allow an audience to feel as if they have become more intimate with the artist of the music video so they will have a stronger connection to the song that the video features and want to buy it. Where is it possible to watch a music video: Music videos are shared/shown on almost all major social media sites: Facebook, twitter, Instagram. They are also able to be bought on sites such as Itunes where people are able to watch their music video without internet, and anywhere they go. With all this social media sharing music videos it is almost imposable not to stumble across one, as they are being advertised so much mainly through word of mouth. Music Televison Channels: MTV Hits, Capital TV, Keerang! TV, Kiss TV, and many more. These channels usually ...

Questionnaire answers Summery

The answers that I got from the questionnaire were quite predictable. The genre question gave away a lot of what people like about their favourite genres. The top 3 genres were hip hop, pop, and rap. These three genres have one main thing in common, They all share having a deep narrative in one way or another. Most people also liked their genres being upbeat which all of these genres have as well. I found that most people liked their music video because of a comedic element or narrative within it. This would keep them interested and make them happy which is a powerful effect on my audience, as they want to be taken away by a music video. The people who said that they had an emotional connection to the music video said that it was because of the story/narrative. Most people who have an emotional connection to a story do so because they have experienced something similar in their life, this would give them a sense of emotional nostalgia which would make them react more than the reg...

Target Audience interests

Image
Films that this target audience might like would most likely be action/outlaw type films. A good example of this is with the film 'War Dogs' This film is about being powerful and doing dangerous things to get a lot of money which might interest these people. As my main target audience might be a bit troubled and have some problems, therefore films like this would take them away from that, it would amerce them in a world that they would long to be in, where they can take a stand against their problems like the people in 'war dogs'. Another film that this target audience could like is 'Baby Driver'. This is a film about the life of an outlaw professional driver. This film might again take them away from their troubles but also give them the thrill that they are missing out in their life. This target audience might be interested in 'Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Their reasons for their interests would be that the main protagonist is around the age of the target a...

Music Video Questionnaire

The results of this questionnaire will be posted on the next blog!

General Target Audience

Old school hip hop's target audience is very particular. Most of Old school hip hop is about the struggles of high crime rates and living in the ghetto with the government not having much care for these areas. The Hip Hop genre very emotional and is a way for the artists to express themselves and the problems they have. This would allow people with the same problems or similar problems to relate to this kind of music. A common group of people for this are teenagers and young adults. In addition to this there is an element for bing very explicit in both lyrics and visuals within music videos in hip hop songs. So this would take away the target audience of youngsters below about the age of 15. 'The hood' and Ghetto activity isn't something that the very old generation would get into as they don't have the energy to do so, therefore this genre wouldn't relate to them. I believe this genre might apply to men as a better target audience more rather than women....

My Song for my Music Video

Miming lyrics, Not completely right but will fit with the lyrics. I’m from a place where the gun rate is way too high, blow the mouse, seen to many real hustlers die. Drive by the 4 5’s and shotgun hauls, don’t jump the street know when the cops come. Ye boy the streets is gutter, everybody gets they hood they don’t deal with colours, they’ll gau bunch you for any motherfucking reason they wanna cuz the product of my hood is live fast die young. It isn’t easy being raised in the ghetto, the paper will tell you we got one of the highest drug levels. And some of these rebelso go on like they’ve been raised by the devil, this cannot continue because we live in the Babylon. My people say it’s got to change, we can’t stay the same cuz we stuck in the phase. Bush and blair is to blame, but we gotta pick up the pace, freedom of speech now, we ain’t slaves. (Will it ever change) Every day as though one there for all to the chorus so sad to see, same mentality (...

Intertextuality within music videos and other Media products

Image
A good example with a music video is Iggy azalea's music video to the song 'Fancy' where she is copying the outfit in the same scene as a program from the 1990's called 'clueless'. This will give a lot of people who grew up watching this program a lot of nostalgia, and bring back some good memories which also shows intertextuality's usefulness. Linkin Park - Breaking the habit This music video clearly uses that dark style of anime used in a lot of anime series from Japan. If anyone who has been a fan of those series they will instantly recognize this style for this music video.

My intertextuality influences

Image
My influence could be from the film 'War Dogs'. This scene shows a man trying to buy some weed off a few men in the 'hood'. This scene clearly illustrates the scene of the 'hood' and what it's about. This would be suited to the song that i have chosen to do a music video for because this scene and my song has the same sort of theme. This is easily shown where a lyric In my song is 'I'm from a place where the gun rate is way too high'. My song makes me picture a typical representation of what happens in the hood and this scene shows it very well.

Intertextuality in Shrek (Example)

Image
Intertextuality is the relationship between texts. It is the idea that all media texts reference one another in one way or another. for example in Shrek there is a lot of itertextuality showing that intertextuality doesn't just have to be with literal 'texts' it cam be in any form of media.   We can clearly see the intertextuality in this video as this scene is almost made from intertextuality.   The first part of the intertextuality is with the three blind mice. When we see them we remember the nursery rhyme that we sang when we were younger. This is then interrupted by the seven dwarfs pushing snow white onto the table. This reminds the audience of the original text where they were told about the story of snow white and the seven dwarfs.  The next part that we see of this intertextuality is when Shrek goes to the bed and the wolf is in the bed. This references the story of little red riding hood and the wolf that replaced her grandma in the bed, reminding us of t...
